After Watching Avatar 3D, glasses into recycle box.

I, personally, have never watched a soccer game on TV in 3D. I’ve never watched any sporting event in 3D yet. But with ESPN announcing broadcasts in 3D and with more and more movies going the route of the 3rd dimension, it is only a matter of time before I will get my chance to partake.

Fans in England, however, got their chance to witness a televised match in 3D as Sky Sports sent a 3D signal to nine various pubs around the country viewing the Manchester United vs. Arsenal game.

The reviews are in, and well, they are mixed. The Guardian and Daily Mail both ran stories about the new technology.

Get the details after the jump…

The Daily Mail, which liked the introduction of 3D to the world of soccer said, “I have seen the future of televised football – and it’s stunning.”

While The Guardian, who was not so impressed, stated, “Football was never designed to compete with interplanetary warfare and alien sex, so it was hardly surprising the first sports event ever broadcast in 3D anywhere in the world left me mildly underwhelmed.”

I honestly, don’t know where I will fall in this debate, but I lean towards the Guardian’s review. I have a hard time grasping how 3D will help make TV sports viewing a better experience. I already dislike the glasses. Even in major films like Avatar, I think it’s a great experience and stunning, but I really don’t want to have to wear glasses to enjoy it.

I do await the opportunity to view sports in 3D, and expect a full review when it happens.
